5 Things to Look Forward to in Dearborn in 2013

Big projects, elections, event—here's what's happening in Dearborn in 2013.

It's 2013—but what does that mean for Dearborn? Here's what residents can expect in the coming year.

Dearborn's Intermodal Passenger Rail Station

Armed with full federal funding, the City of Dearborn officially kicked off construction on the new train station in September of 2012. The fast-paced project is set to be completed in the fall of 2013—and with it, big plans for helping to welcome more visitors to Dearborn, as well as create more sustainability for the west downtown area.

University of Michigan-Dearborn Student Housing

Also set for completion in 2013 is a new student housing option for University of Michigan-Dearborn students. The project, located on Town Center Drive across the street from the main campus, is under construction now, and will include rooms for 500, a university center, plus fitness and meal facilities.

City Council elections

Whether you're looking for change or hoping to re-elect some current council members, elections bring on public discourse about local issues—always a good thing. All seven city council seats, plus the mayor, are up for election in 2013. Who are you rooting for in 2013?

Hiring Our Heroes

Last year's inaugural Dearborn job fair aimed at finding jobs for veterans was such a success, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has committed to hosting the event again. Held in partnership with the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, Hiring Our Heroes will take place April 4, 2013, at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center.

Progress Toward Moving City Hall

Although the big move of Dearborn's municipal offices isn't set to actually happen until 2014, much of the details about the new city hall, as well as Artspace's plans to purchase and renovate the old city hall, will be developed and divulged in 2013. Love the plan or hate it, this monumental change for Dearborn will be topic to follow in the coming year and beyond—and Patch will be there to report on it. In regards to the City Council and Mayoral Race, I'm curious as to who will be putting their hats into the ring so to speak. And of course, who won't be re-running, if anyone. I'm quite certain it will be an interesting election year here in Dearborn!
